Sciatica Pain
Are you dealing with sharp, shooting pain that starts in your lower back or glutes and travels down your leg? Or perhaps you’re experiencing numbness, tingling, or a burning sensation down one leg? These could be symptoms of sciatica.
Understanding Sciatica
Sciatica is a common condition marked by pain radiating along the sciatic nerve’s path, which runs from your lower back through your hips and glutes, extending down each leg. Typically, sciatica affects only one side of the body, causing discomfort, numbness, or weakness in the lower back, buttocks, and legs.
Symptoms
Pain in the hip, glutes and/or leg
Tingling or burning sensation
Numbness or weakness
Pain worsened with coughing, sneezing or bending
Symptoms on one side of the
body
Pain worsened with prolonged sitting or standing
What Causes Sciatica?
Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated. The most common causes include:
- Disc Bulge: A herniated or protruding disc in the spine can put pressure on the sciatic nerve.
- Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal can lead to sciatic nerve compression.
- Piriformis Syndrome: Spasms or tightness in the piriformis muscle, located in the buttocks, can compress the sciatic nerve.
- Spondylolisthesis: One vertebra slips over another, leading to nerve compression.
- Injury: Trauma to the lower back or buttocks may trigger sciatica.
- Arthritis & Joint Degeneration: Age-related wear and tear on the spine can compress the sciatic nerve.
